CranioSacral Therapy (CST)

& SomatoEmotional Release (SER)

CST was developed by several osteopathic physicians. Dr. Upledger studied this technique from 1975 to 1983 at Michigan State University, where he served as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics, then began teaching this technique to healthcare professionals.

CST is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system. This system is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

Using a soft touch, practitioners gently assess the movement within this system. Treatment involves gentle movement of tissues of the body to release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.

By complementing the body's natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is helpful for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction.

What takes place in a CST Session?

In a typical CranioSacral Therapy session the client remains fully clothed and lies on their back (if possible) on the treatment or massage table.

The therapist may place their hands on key evaluation areas such as the ankles, head, neck, lower back, assessing the state of the client's CranioSacral system. The treatment itself involves the application of very light touch or gentle pressure applied by the therapist's hands.

Limbs may be picked up and moved gently and slowly as the body tissues are allowed to 'unwind' themselves.

How Long are the Sessions?

Most sessions last about an hour, but this may vary depending on the problem you are working on.

What is SER?

SomatoEmotional Release (SER) is a therapeutic process that uses and expands on the principles of Cranio-Sacral Therapy to help release from the mind and body the residual effects of physical and/or emotional trauma.

Trauma is an experience of injury that results in storage of emotions and patterns of bodily tension that may result in physical and emotional disturbances.

SER is designed to enhance results using CST and other complementary therapies to help you release stored emotions that may be blocking your healing process.

CST and SER are often used along with other treatments, such as massage, or a psychotherapy process, to assist you in working through both the physical and emotional aspects of issues that may be causing you physical or emotional problems.
